The microblog of Ruo Xiaoan 1, which purported to be the posts of a female sex worker in Hangzhou and attracted enormous attention from media and internet users, was actually a fake written by a man surnamed Lin, say local police according to Zhejiang Online.
The blogger, who garnered more than 260,000 followers by claiming to be a Hangzhou sex worker writing about her encounters with customers was in fact a 31-year-old married man who plagiarized from foreign literature. He has been fined 500 yuan (US$80) by Hangzhou police for “disturbing social order” after uploading a list of the fictional sex worker’s clients.
Lin used the pseudonym “A Hangzhou Woman Gone Astray” to publish 401 posts on his blog and used alluring tags such as “sex worker,” “hooker,” “whore” and “bottom” to draw attention to his tales.
The microblog got the attention of the police when one post claimed the sex worker had had sexual relations with over 3000 customers in the last seven years (she claimed to have entered the profession at the age of 15) and that there were close to one thousand customers’ phone numbers in her mobile phone, including university professors and governmental officials.
Police investigations soon traced the origin of the posts to a home in the provincial capital, where Lin was found hunched over his computer, writing — or rather copying — his latest titillating entry.
Lin, a senior editor of a cultural magazine in Zhejiang, copied foreign literature, translating them into Chinese and posting them in bite-size chunks on the microblog as the diary of a sex worker.
The diary comprised short sentences, some expressing Ruo’s feelings as she served her customers, some describing sexual scenes and some discussing the life of a Chinese sex worker with other online users.
The blog attracted a following of thousands, many comments dubbing the writer “China’s most talented prostitute,” while others tried to persuade her to quit being a sex worker and become a writer, praising her authentic and straightforward writing style. Yet, yet she said she loves many of her clients and doesn’t want to give up her live as a prostitute.
According to the blog, Ruo is a 22-year-old female who has “gone astray” for more than five years. She lives in Hangzhou, loves reading and strolling around the scenic West Lake and hopes to live the life of a philosophical sex worker.
When the news that Ruo is actually a man came to light, some internet users declared themselves completely dumbstruck, while others have said that the punishment given to Lin is too light. In the alternate reality of the online world, some netizens have suggested Ruo is real and the exposure of Lin as the culprit is the true hoax on the part of the police, to protect the sex worker’s government clients.
What is known, however, is that the contents of the Ruo Xiaoan microblog have now been deleted.
